Annabel Grawunder Crow passed away peacefully in Bellville, Texas on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014.

She was born on April 23, 1927 in Houston, Texas, to Maude Foster and Thomas Lincoln Clemons. Her family later moved to Hempstead, and then to the community of Cochran, where she attended Cochran Elementary School.

She first noticed a boy with beautiful blue eyes named Herman Grawunder when Cochran played Bradbury Elementary in baseball. They both attended Bellville High School.

They married on Aug. 22, 1947, and moved to Huntsville to attend Sam Houston State Teachers College. After earning their degrees, they moved back to the Raccoon Bend community, built their house, and raised their family, with Herman’s mother and step father, Florence and Ralph Brosig across the road for caring support.

Later, they were the beloved “Nannie” and “Papa” of their grandchildren Nathan, Seth, and Colby Grawunder.

Herman passed away in 1997, the year of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Annabel was a lively, engaging kind of person who was always curious about other people, places, and ideas. She had a lifelong love of learning, continuing her studies in education through much of her life. Her first degree was in History and English. It took her 6 years to earn her next degree, a Master’s degree in Elementary Education, because she was teaching full time and taking care of her family. (Herman typed her papers!) Later she got her kindergarten certification and switched from teaching first grade to kindergarten, beginning by establishing a head start program in Bellville ISD. She loved working with little children, and always had many stories to tell about them.

Nearing retirement, she went back to school again, part-time, to get certified to diagnose and tutor students with dyslexia. After retirement, she tutored students of all ages in her little office overlooking the square in Bellville.

On August 19, 2000, Annabel married Richard Crow. They enjoyed each other’s companionship, and took many trips together. Richard passed away in 2012.

Annabel was preceded in death by her parents, Maude Foster and Thomas Lincoln Clemons, sister Jonnie Lucille Thompson, husband Herman Arthur Grawunder, and husband Richard Jackson Crow.

She is survived by her daughter Teresa Grawunder, her son Thomas and daughter-in-law Vonnie Grawunder, her grandsons and their wives: Nathan and Angie Grawunder, Seth and Suzanne Grawunder, and Colby Grawunder, great-grandchildren Layne, Whitley, Hudson and Luke Grawunder, sister-in-law Rose Marie Trenckmann, nephew John Zuber, niece Shirley Krumrey and husband Donald, nephew Howard Douglas Thompson, great-nephew Robert Krumrey and wife Melanie, great-niece Karen Meyer and husband Drew, great-great nieces and nephews: Kory, Cooper and Kayla Krumrey, Anna, Leah, and Kane Meyer, and many more relatives and dear friends.

She was a member of numerous organizations over the years, including The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Texas Retired Teachers Association, and The Bellville Historical Society. She was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church for 67 years.
