Althea (Gavin) Cuttino, 95, formerly of Bellville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, in Houston. She was born on Sept. 6, 1918, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Ned and Winn Gavin. Althea grew up in Fall River until the age of 12, and then she moved to Greensville, S.C. A city gal married a country boy, Herman Cuttino, on Nov. 6, 1937, at her parents’ home. Althea and Herman resided in several cities, finally calling Miami, Fla. home for 17 years, before moving to the Houston area. In the late 1970’s, they moved to Bellville and lived there until Herman passed away in 1986. A year after his death, she moved back to the Houston area to be close to family.

Althea was a past president of the Women’s Lion Club Auxiliary, a volunteer candy stripper at Memorial City Hospital and a volunteer reading tutor with HISD. She provided Christmas for foster families in the Houston area. Althea was a loving and caring lady, who was hard on the outside, but soft on the inside. She loved teasing and being teased by others. A fiery, spunky and outgoing person, who loved a good party and her laughter, would fill the room. She enjoyed reading history and mystery novels and enjoyed the theater and fine arts. Althea was a wonderful cook and in her later years, she enjoyed eating at two of her favorite restaurants in Houston, Andreas and Marks.

Althea is survived by her children Elizabeth Martin of Spring, Texas, Ann Quiroz and her husband, David, of Spring, Texas, and Edward Cuttino and his wife, Carol, of Broomfield, Colorado; grandchildren Amy Wiley, Amanda Quiroz, Sarah Quiroz and Steven Cuttino; great grandchildren Gavin Cuttino, Aiden Cuttino and Emma Wiley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Cuttino.

A visitation was from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville. Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the Bellville United Methodist Church with Pastor Amy Haralson officiating. Interment followed in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Quiroz, Steven Cuttino, Jason Wiley, Bill Thornton, Fred Gutierrez, William Cuttino, David Cuttino and Philip Quiroz.
