A. E. Mewis Funeral Rites Held Tuesday A. E. (Bootie) Mewis, a prominent Austin County Cattleman and business executive passed away in Bellville Sunday night. Funeral services were held here from the Chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville at 4:00 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, with the Rev. Willard Rother officiating. Interrment was at the Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery. Mr. Mewis passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, October 10, 1971, having obtained the age of 89 years, 8 months and ? days. He had been in failing health for the past four months. Born in Bellville on January 31, 1882, he was the son of Mr. And Mrs. John A. Mewis, and was reared in the Piney Cmmunity and educated in Piney and Coshatte public Schools. A retired rancher and business executive, Mr. Mewis served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Bellville since 1924. He served as county commissioner from December 1, 1920 to December 31, 1928. Mr. Mewis served as a school trustee and was on the hospital board for many years. He was also a member of the cattlemen's association and the Concordia Singing Society. Mr. Mewis was married to the former Miss Mary Kenter on September 17, 1902. She passed away on October 28, 1910. On June 24, 1914 he was married to Martha Berndt. She passed away on October 5, 1970. Pallbearers were: grandsons, Bill Mewis, Bubba Mewis, Monroe Mewis, Herman A. Grawunder, Roy Mewis, Paul Mewis, Gene Huebner, and Kenneth Becker. Members of the First National Bank of Bellville were all considered Honarary Pallbearers. They are: Al Brooks, W. R. Crick, Fred Sander, A. A. Boriack, R. A. Neely, M. D., Clarence Sehier, Miles Wilson, Nelson Davis, Joe Peschke, and Dan Hruska. Mr. Mewis is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Ralph Brosig, Mrs. W. G. Engelking, Mrs. J. F. McGowan, Mrs. Harvey Pause, Mrs. E. H. Winn, Mrs. Gilmore Huebner, all Bellville; four sons, Monroe, Colbert, Leon, Jesse, all of Bellville; one brother, Ben Mewis of Bellville; twenty grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by one son Roy, three sisters and five brothers. Funeral services were conducted under the direction of Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home of Bellville. With the death of A. E. (Bootie) Mewis late Sunday evening, one of the area's as well of that of all Texas, lost a kind, colorful, strictly honest and honorable character. He was my friend, and I recall how many times during the eighty six years that I knew him, his stories were as fascinating as a picture book to a child. Mr. Mewis was a neighbor of my mother and her family, and he also spoke most kindly of her, although she was more than ten years his senior. Mother and Dad and Uncle Dick Zeiske were always extremely fond of him and his entire family. In times like this it is, I strongly believe, well to remember the lighter things, even some comical things about a lost loved one. Mr. Mewis thoroughly enjoyed a good joke, and I can see him now, drinking coffee, then having a true belly laugh, shaking all over. I often sought his advice, and was never mislead. His white hat, boots, and vest, were trademarks of this famed cattleman. The name Bootie was said to have originated from the time when he was a little boy, insisted on boots instead of shoes. His work with the Bellville Hospital, as a county commissioner, and First National Bank Director, as well as dozens of other items, will long be remembered.
