Bellville Times

Sam A. Johnson, 89, of Sealy, who had the heart of a champion…..a son of a preacher-man…with hard skills and work determination, was born Jan. 29, 1925, in a little church in Humble. Sam Johnson left this world at 9:39 am Tuesday morning, June 24, 2014, in Houston, to return to heaven and was joined with his beloved wife Mary Jo and his family circle in the sky.

His parents, brother O.D. Johnson and Tillie Marie Johnson were leaders in the Pentecostal revival movement of the 1920’s, and survived difficult times of the depression by hard work, the grace of God and determination. The family constructed by hand, from the bark up, a log home “out in the country” in what is now east Houston. Everybody worked, but big brother Sam led the team. From milking the family cows to an extra part time job as a golf caddy at Texaco Country Club, Sam and his brother, Nat not only worked their way up the ladder of success, they built the ladder. Sam graduated from Humble High School and was accepted into the University of Texas (class of 1946) where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Business. Sam served in the Navy during the Second World War, obtaining the rank Apprentice Seaman. He then returned to Houston to pursue his career.

From the golf business to the building and real estate business, Sam forged leadership and relationships that helped steer the course of Houston homebuilding and development. He entered the building business in Houston in 1952. He was a part of the development of the Meyerland and Memorial area, founded the Tri County Title Company, and was part of the development of the Champion Golf Course. Sam received two Parade of Homes awards and in 1962 was made Chairman of the Custom Builders’ Committee of the Houston Home Builders. He was a member of the National, the Texas and the Houston Home Builders’ Associations. He was the owner of The Real Estate Company in Sealy at the time of his death.

Family and friends adored him; unscrupulous foes feared and respected him. He adopted and mentored many, was a visionary who blazed trails and guided and gave back. On the back nine of his life, to God be the glory, he returned to his roots via the Christian City Fellowship Church.

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Sam is preceded in death by: parents O.D. Johnson and Tillie Marie Johnson, wife Mary Jo Johnson, brother Nat Johnson, sister Rachel Curlee, children Bruce Johnson and Cindy Johnson.
