Lovine Marketa (Margarite) Kulhanek, a resident of East Bernard, died peacefully at her home on March 19, 2017 at the age of 92.

Lovine was born on March 10, 1925 on the Martisak farm in Hallettsville, Texas, the first daughter of Antonia (Tonnie) Dujka and John Lawrence Martisak. The family moved to the Tavener community when she was one year old. She attended Central School through eighth grade, and graduated Orchard High School in 1942. On June 16, 1945, she married Jerry Francis Kulhanek, and the couple settled in the Tavener community where they farmed together for 53 years, and raised a family. After her children were grown, she worked at the furniture factory in East Bernard, and as a library assistant for the Brazos Independent School District in Orchard.

Lovine was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed homemaking, gardening, and reading. She was a member and past officer of the Wallis chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of the Krasna Cemetery Association, serving as their Secretary Treasurer for 25 years.

She is survived by her three children, Antoinette Rothenberg and husband Damon Paul of Maryland; Franklin Kulhanek of East Bernard; and Jim Kulhanek of Wallis; grandson John Paul Rothenberg and his wife Cara of Maryland; great-grandson John Paul Rothenberg, Jr. and great-granddaughter Evelynn Hope Rothenberg of Maryland; sister, Gladys Holly of Rosenberg; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 24, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Knesek & Sons Funeral Home in Wallis. A rosary will begin at 7:00 pm., led by the Catholic Daughters. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:00 am at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, with Rev. Thuy Nguyen officiating. Interment will be at Krasna Cemetery in Wallis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lovine's name to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030-4123.
