Henry Bartay, well known local man and a familiar figure here for over 20 years, died at his home here at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January 21, of a heart attack. He was 76 years old.

A native of New Wehdem, he was born January 7, 1868. His mother died when he was three years old and his father when he was 13. Orphaned at this early age he successfully managed for himself and many years ago was married to Miss Isabell Coufal in Brenham.

Mr. Bartay was constable of the Nelsonville precinct for more than 20 years and moved his family to Bellville in 1923. Since the incorporation of the city in 1928, he was city marshal until he retired because of ill health. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church. Among his hobbies were fishing and gardening, and every year his garden was one of the city's best.

Mr. Bartay had countless friends, not only in Bellville but throughout the county. He was well-liked and always had a pleasant word to say. He was a lover of music and a talented musician. For many years he had been a member of the Sons of Hermann and SPJST lodges.

Services, with a huge crowd of sorrowing friends attending, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, from his late home with interment in the Santa Anna Cemetery. Father A.J. Crann of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic church officiated and pallbearers were Elgin Ueckert, Joe A. Peschke, A.F. Girndt, H.F. Granau, Mayor Walter Chatham and Lee F. Weige.

Surviving are his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Chas F. Eckelberg, Mrs. J.J. Pavelka of Bellville and Mrs. Leslie Eber of Sealy; five sons, E.G. Bartay of Wallis, Roland and Eldridge Bartay of Bellville, Lee Roy Bartay of Hempstead and Gilbert Bartay of El Dorado, Ark; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Lierman, Mrs. Annie Fisher and Mrs. Lena Ruggles of Bellville; one brother, Andrew Bartay of New Ulm, and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
