Service Held for Mrs Mewis Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Mewis, a lifelong resident of Austin County, were held from the Chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville at 4 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. James Frazier officiating. Burial was in the Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery. Mrs. Mewis passed away in the Bellville Hospital at 2 p.m. Monday, October 5, 1970, having attained the age of 84 years, 4 months and 1 day. She had been in failing health for the past five years. Born in Bellville on June 4, 1886 , she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Berndt. She was reared in Bellville and educated in the Piney Public School. She was baptized in the Methodist Faith. On June 24, 1944, the former Miss Martha Berndt was married to Mr. A. E. Mewis in ceremonies held at Sealy. Survivors include her husband Mr. A. E. Mewis, daughters Mrs. Ralph Brosig, Mrs. W. G. Engelking, Mrs. J. F. McGowan, Mrs. Harvey Prause, Mrs. E. H. Winn and Mrs. Gilmore Huebner, all of Bellville, four sons Monroe, Colbert, Leon and James Mewis, all of Bellville, 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Roy Mewis, two sisters and three brothers. Pallbearers were grand- (clipping cut off here.)
